THE UGLY DUCKLING

By Hans Christian Andersen

17 May, 2016

This story tells about a baby stork who was born on a duck farm. Because of the difference in appearance, he was nicknamed the ugly duckling. Many animals harassed and taunted him. Nobody wants to play with him. Even though he had left the farm out there, there were still many animals who mocked him too. And so on, until finally he was able to turn into a beautiful stork.

Pros of The Story

The conflict in this story is not too heavy so readers can enjoy reading it. Apart from that, the message in this story is very good. The story description is also easy to understand.

Cons of The Story

Like stories in general, the diction used is quite difficult for someone who is still a beginner in learning English. If readers misinterpret the purpose or meaning of the story, it can cause misunderstanding, namely normalizing discrimination against people who are considered unattractive.

After reading this story, there are many messages that can be taken away. As the saying goes, don't judge a book by its cover. But there is also a feeling of sadness because what happens to ugly ducklings is something we often encounter in the real world. This story is well written and interesting. The story is also not too long so it doesn't take much time to read.
